Nursing apprenticeships - a new way of learning
A relatively new pathway that’s available to aspiring nurses is an apprenticeship in nursing. To become a qualified nurse, students typically need to complete a degree in nursing. However, the apprenticeship provides an alternative route, which still provides the same qualification on completion, but in a different way. Officially known as the nursing degree apprenticeship, this route enables students to achieve this qualification whilst being employed and gaining plenty of work experience as a result. The nursing degree apprenticeship is being seen as an attractive alternative to the traditional route into nursing.
What’s it really like?
There are some similarities between typical university degrees and nursing degree apprenticeships. Whereas students on nursing degrees split their time evenly between academic and clinical settings, students on the degree apprenticeship will spend roughly 80% of their time in clinical settings and the rest at university. As you’ll be studying at university for 20% of the time, it is considered to be part-time study, so the apprenticeship will take longer to complete - usually four years.
As nursing students undertaking a degree apprenticeship, the curriculum won’t differ drastically from the curriculum that is studied by those undertaking the traditional route. An important thing to note is that nursing degree apprenticeships aren’t currently available at every university. So, it’s important to do your research, and check for the apprenticeships online, and which university they’re connected to.
